What is moissanite? Is it a good gem? Let's start this question with the origin of moissanite.
Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, which only exists in the crater and its colors are mainly dark green or black. So moissanite available in the market today is laboratory-created. After many years of trial and error, the particles discovered by Henri Moissan were successfully synthesized. Then, the moissanite, one of the world’s most glamorous gemstones, came out. Synthetic moissanite is also known as Synthetic Carbon Silica (Chemical Composition: Sic).
The ones with D Level color, unique Belgian cutting, and FL/IF Clarity Level are called as Square Silicone moissanite.
Moissanite looks very similar to the natural diamond and it’s hard for the naked eyes to tell their differences. It’s also a kind of gemstone with the closest physical properties to a natural diamond.

Color of moisssanite:
At present, moissante can achieve colorless. There’re mostly transparent colorless, nearly colorless, and light yellow. It has total 11 color levels: D, E, F (transparent colorless), G, H, I, J, K, L(nearly colorless), M, N (light yellow). As for Trifairy, a fine jewelry brand, all moissanite gemstones it use are all D color level.
Clarity for moissanite:
Moissanite has a hexagonal crystal system and can crystallize to 2-3’’ columnar crystal. Some moissante can reach IF (Internally Flawless) grade (no impurities inside. It only has a few minor blemishes, which can usually removed by polishing). Most of synthetic moissanite contains fine white linear inclusions composed of white spots. They’re mostly VS (Vert Slight) grade or SI (Slight included) grade. Only a tiny minority of moissanite gemstones contains dark metallic spheres inside. Trifairy’s moissanite gemstones are all of VVSI clarity grade, a perfect quality.
Carat of moissanite:
The specific gravity of moissanite is 3.22. (Natural diamond is 3.52), which is about 8.8%-10% lighter than the natural diamond. When the diameter is same 6.5mm for both moissanite and diamond, the diamond is usually 200mg( that is 1 carat), while the synthetic moissanite weighs just over 160mg (80 cents),
Brilliance of moissanite:
The moissanite gemstone has the unique faceting pattern. Such that cutting pattern can to the utmost extent refract and reflect the light coming into moissanite over and over again without penetrating, and finally those lights are transmitted from the crown surface. With the assistance of this particular faceting pattern, 1 beam of light which enters inside the moissanite is turned into dozens or even hundreds of beams of lights with different colors, which makes the moissanite bright and colorful.
With the special physical, chemical and optical properties, moissanite can emit the fiery and rainbow flashes. This kind of gemstone has a very high refractive index of 2.65-2.69. a dispersion index of 0.104, and a gloss rate of 20.4. At the same time, the moissanite has a hardness of 9.25 Mohs, which precedes any other gemstones except the natural diamond. Its high hardness makes it resistant to scratching and cracking and able to last forever.
With the superior hardness and purity comparable to the natural diamond, more dazzling brilliance, and relatively cheap price per carat , the moissanite is gradually known and accepted by the public and is widely used for jewelry, such as ,ring, necklace pendant, stud earrings and other styles.
